The subjects took low doses of the extract supplement, higher doses of the extract supplement, and placebos 30 minutes before a meal, without changing their exercise or nutrition habits. Participants lost an average of 17 pounds during the 22 weeks of the study. It included an average of a 10.5 percent decrease in overall body weight and a 16 percent decrease in body fat. An even more interesting note is that they maintained a daily caloric intake of 2400 calories – certainly not a low calorie diet by any means. Other studies have shown that the chlorogenic acids from green coffee bean extracts may also be helpful for supporting healthy blood pressure levels so even if the scale doesn’t read lower, your blood pressure will. One of my favourite supplements containing green coffee bean is my Clear Vive-which is also great for brain energy and optimizing the results of your workout.

Learn To Love L-carnitine: L-carnitine is actually required by the body to release energy from fat and to transfer fatty acids across cell membranes to the mitochondria where it can be used as energy. It’s a great energy booster to take before cardio or strength-training – and as a bonus, it will also improve your recovery times so you are less inclined to skip your workout the following day. One study found that 1000mg of L-carnitine taken three times daily over 12 weeks significantly lowered fasting blood sugar in middle-aged adults with type 2 diabetes. Remember, an imbalance of blood sugar and insulin will have you battling the scale. For the ultimate fat-burning duo I recommend pairing 2-4 capsules (or 1 tsp) of extra strength fish oil with 500mg-1000mg of l-carnitine twice daily.

Curb Inflammation (And Weight Gain) With Curcumin: Getting off the couch and into your spring sporting regimen may have you feeling a little creaky and out of shape. In this case, curcumin may be your best bet. Curcumin (also known as turmeric) could be helpful in treating painful inflammatory conditions, such as tendonitis and arthritis, according to researchers. They observed the effects that curcumin had on the inflammatory and degenerative properties induced by signalling molecules called interleukins. Interleukins are a type of small cell-signalling protein molecules called cytokines that can activate a whole series of inflammatory genes. The results showed that introducing curcumin can essentially block the inflammatory process without the side effects of standard NSAIDs and pain medication. Curcumin also fights inflammation at the fat cell level while also increasing adiponectin production – a hormone that helps your fat cells work for you and not against you by increasing insulin sensitivity. Take 1-2 capsules on an empty stomach (30 minutes before a meal or 2 hours after one). If you experience heartburn simply take it with food.

Cool Cravings With Chromium: Chromium is a mineral involved in regulating the body’s response to insulin. Chromium deficiency often results in insulin resistance, a condition characterized by weight gain (especially in the love handles area) and “crashing” after eating carbohydrates. Insulin resistance may result in type 2 diabetes if not properly treated with diet, exercise and supplements. In a 2008 study conducted at the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center, researchers demonstrated that long-term glucose control, insulin and cholesterol improved in patients following chromium supplementation. Other studies have shown that 600mcg of chromium daily can reduce carb cravings and regulate appetite in depressed patients. Chromium piccolinate, the most absorbable form of chromium may help weight loss because of its positive effect on insulin response. To jumpstart your weight loss goals you can go as high as 600mcg twice a day with food for one month and then reduce to 200mg-600mg every morning with breakfast.

Not only that, but according to a Purdue University study, this supplement may be able to block fat cells from growing and developing (fat cells can only shrink or expand, however they have an unlimited ability to increase in size). Resveratrol appears to improve insulin sensitivity, which can ward off diabetes (in conjunction with a diet low in sugars and starchy carbs) and help you achieve your weight loss goal.
